Angelos Epithemiou

He owns a burger van. He wants to break into showbusiness. He carries a carrier bag and he is, against all odds, magnificent. Angelos Epithemiou is the cult creation of Dan Renton Skinner — a gloriously hapless everyman who shuffled onto our screens and refused to leave.

The character broke big on Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer's Shooting Stars, where Angelos joined as a permanent panellist and then took over as scorekeeper, the 'what's in your bag?' bloke who became the show's unlikely hero. Skinner reportedly got him there by sending Mortimer a tape in character — a bit of front that paid off handsomely.

Live, it's a masterclass in commitment: deadpan, shambolic, weirdly poignant, and far funnier than a man with a carrier bag has any right to be. There's nothing else quite like it on a comedy bill.
